APPLICATIONS- Near Balance Drilling: To drill with a very low differential pressure between the pore pressure and the equivalent mud weight. Ideal to maximize information gathered and/or prevent formation damage in depleted reservoirs
- Narrow margin wells: To drill wells where the margin between maximum pore pressure and minimum fracture pressure in the same section is very narrow:
- A slight increase in the mud weight and losses occur
- A slight decrease in the mud weight and the well flows
EQUIPMENT & SYSTEMS - Option 1: To install an electromagnetic flowmeter or a Coriolis mass flowmeter for advanced detection (see GeoEK - Real Time Early Kick and Loss Detection)
- Option 2: A software package to model the mud pit volume increase or decrease at each pipe connection using GEOLOG´s FlowGuardianTM software
METHOD - To display versus time the change (delta) in surface mud volume when the pumps stop/start to obtain trends
- Any deviation during a pipe connection from the displayed envelopes indicates a possible Kick or mud loss
- This anomalous flow indication can come less than 30 seconds from the onset of a Kick
